Lesson 10 - Sex and Gender

Gender role socialization is learning how to either be masculine or feminine.  In this case the gender roles are being played out perfectly.  The male is showing the women clinging to his arm the way and leading her.  She is nicely following his lead and is depending on him to lead her in the right direction.

This sign refers to sex as of the two biological categories.  The categories are male and female, and the signs are to depict the different sexes easily by a simple look at the sign.

Gender role socialization is shown in media stereotypically and most often time show a male and a female together.  The two opposite sexes are generally showed together because the majority of society views that one sex should be with the opposite sex.

Sexual orientation deals with whatever sex one sex may be attracted to.  Here, the sexual orientation being shown by both individuals is heterosexual.  They are both attracted to the opposite sex and they each of them are opposite sexes.

Gender is the behavioral personality traits that a group considers normal for males and females.  A male being boyish and loving a female is considered normal because it is boyish, or manly to do.

Lesson 9 - Race and Ethnicity

Race is shown here by two males who both have black skin so they would be classified in a specific group based of the color of their skin.  Nothing else will put them in this defined category other than the biological difference than the majority population.

Cultural assimilation is being shown here while a non-Asian has adopted a material cultural object.  Chopsticks are thought to be only used by Asians but are adopted by the rest of the population.

These boys are not from Hawaii, they are from California, but when take to Hawaii they act as if the are Hawaiian for the few days they are over there.  They put on flower leis and make Hawaiian gestures.  These guys are an example of how some people use symbolic ethnicity to have a good time.

Racism is displayed here because stereotypically society believes that all Asians are super smart.  If it is true or not, the stereotype looks as if to be true by this Asian's Halloween costume and may be seen as racist to people.

My friend Krishan and I are very good friends, and in being such close friends we are showing pluralism.  Together we are encouraging ethnic variation within a society.

Lesson 7 - Deviance and Conformity

This form of deviance causes a negative reaction because this pose is usually done by women trying to give a sexy appearance to men, but instead it is a male, and the pose does not have the same effect and is just not normal for viewers.

This is considered a tribal stigma because these individuals are all part of an oppressed group.  Who knows what they may be up to but they do not look like they are completely up to anything to great.

This form of deterrence is threatening to punish in order to get what is wanted from them.  The threat will cause the individual to do what they are supposed to do because they do not want this to happen to them.

A violent crime is one that is done with a violent objective.  At this point we were all rivals and all wanted to kill each other because we were all after the same title.

This is a photo of a crime being done in the act.  He is currently taking a wallet from a women's purse and running off with it.  This crime is a crime because it break social norms, he is taking something that does not belong to him.

Lesson 4 - Culture

This is a cultural norm, a man is opening a door for a woman, even though he could have gone through the door first and not waited for her to walk through.

Language is a huge part of culture, it can be a factor that shapes culture the most with the use of spoken or written word.  Most cultures have their own language as seen here when the name Katie is written in Mandarin Chinese.

Different cultures have different gestures for the same thought, or different meanings for the same hand gesture.  In this case Angela, in our culture, is giving me the peace hand gesture to give me peace.  In other cultures this same hand gesture mean very different things.

Chopsticks are associated with material culture.  This eating utensil is generally used Asian cultures.  This material of the Asian culture are not regularly used in other cultures.

Red lights in this society, and in this situation mean to stop, to not drive any further than the line blocking off the intersection.  This is a sign that many other people may not know if they are not from this society or a society where they use this sign.
